The ancient dwelling sits inside a rocky limestone cliff and consists of 20 rooms spanning five stories.

Where is Montezuma Castle National Monument

Montezuma Castle National Monument is located in Camp Verde in central Arizona, about 90 minutes north of Phoenix.

Montezuma Castle National Monument is open daily from 8:00 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. The park is closed on major holidays.

Visiting Montezuma Castle National Monument

Once you arrive at Montezuma Castle you’ll head into the park’s Visitor Center to purchase your admission ticket.

Current ticket prices are $10 USD for adults ages 16 and over. Children 15 and under are free.

You can also use your America the Beautiful pass from the National Park Service to gain entry to this park.

After you’ve purchased your admission ticket you can view the exhibits located inside the Visitor Center.

Please note, Montezuma Castle has a large parking area and parking is free.

Do be advised that on busy days, the lot may fill up. If the lot is full when you arrive, you can usually find a parking spot after a short wait.

Montezuma Castle National Monument Visit Center

The area inside the Visitor Center is set up like a small museum.

Through the various exhibits you’ll learn about who the Sinagua people were and where they originated from, why they might have chosen the Verde Valley as their home, how then constructed the cave dwelling, and lots of information about what the daily lives may have been like for the Sinagua people.

I recommend spending time viewing the exhibits before heading out to see the cave dwelling. You’ll have a better perspective of what you’re viewing if you see the exhibits first.

I would also like to note that Montezuma Castle is the third National Monument dedicated to preserving Native American culture and history.

The other National Monuments include Montezuma Well and Tuzigoot National Monument.

Is Montezuma Castle Worth Seeing?

Yes, Montezuma Castle is worth visiting. For those interested in learning about the history of Arizona, a visit to Montezuma Castle will be both educational and rewarding.

Montezuma Castle is considered one of the best preserved cliff dwellings in North America. A visit here is an excellent opportunity to view a pre-historic cliff dwelling in person and learn about its importance to those who previously lived here.

You can access the viewing area for the cliff dwelling via a short paved pathway from the Visitor Center. The walk will take just two minutes to see the dwelling.

The paved trail continues past the cliff dwelling and follows alongside the adjacent Beaver Creek, which winds though the park. The distance of the paved trail is about 1/3 of a mile.

This flat paved trail offers a chance to see the beautiful scenery of the area near the cliff dwelling and is suitable for most visitors.

How much time do you need to visit Montezuma Castle?

You can visit Montezuma Castle in about 45 minutes to one hour.

If you are in a hurry, you can skip the exhibits in the Visitor Center and be in and out in under 20 minutes.

If you have additional time, you may want to consider heading north to visit Montezuma Well. This is a second site of additional cliff dwellings located about 20 minutes north.

Can you go inside Montezuma Castle?

No, visitors cannot enter the cliff dwelling at Montezuma Castle.

Many years ago visitors were permitted to enter the dwellings via a series of ladders.

Unfortunately, due to the damage caused by previous visitors, the dwellings can now only be viewed from the paved trail down below.

That being said, Montezuma Castle is one of my favorite Arizona parks and places to visit during an Arizona road trip.
